Portrait painting
This portrait workshop has been split into two parts in order to give the freedom to choose the timings that work best for you. While you have the chance to sign up for either one of the parts or both, following the two-part program will help push your skill and understanding further.
The portrait is given as a hybrid in-person and online workshop. Once a week on Monday mornings the class will be held in Studio Valdus, Lausanne to ensure that you have the ‘over-the-shoulder’ level of critique for your work. The online videos and resources will be shared week by week to allow you to look over some of the material while you are working from home. Having the extra time at home to practise the lessons learnt or to push your work to the next level is invaluable.
Part 1 - The features
29th September - 20th October
This first section of the course introduces the separate parts of the face. Through studying the features individually, we are looking to develop our understanding of the underlying structure, how the light can be best represented, and how we can look for changes between different models.
Each week we will take a look at one feature of the face and look to make multiple studies either in pencil or in paint. Drawing in pencil is a foundational skill that should not be overlooked. Working in paint in this section of the course we will be mostly working in the alla prima method.
Studying the features was the first step before moving into portraiture in the 19th century French academies. We are following in the footsteps of painters who knew how to build up their skills.
Part 2 - The portrait
3rd November - 24th November
This second section of the course we will work on a life size portrait. You will learn the skills to bring your portraits to a refined finish whilst leaving opportunity to have variation in the surface quality through an indirect painting method.
We will build each week with progressive steps that will ensure that your work is brought up with increasing sophistication and polish.Portrait painting is a key skill for any artist looking to work figuratively and wanting to hone their accuracy, refinement, and finish.
Portraiture opens the door for finding direct connections between the artist, sitter, and the final viewer.
